CBCS is for Cameroon Biodiversity Conservation Society. The main objective of this organisation is the conservation of biological diversity through the protection of birds and natural habitats, as well as the promotion of wildlife study and enjoyment for the benefit of people.	CBCS est un acronyme pour Cameroon Biodiversity Conservation Society (Société Camerounaise de Conservation pour la Biodiversité). L'objectif principal de cette organisation est la conservation de la diversité biologique par la protection des oiseaux et de leurs habitats naturels, ainsi que la promotion de l'étude des animaux sauvages pour le bien des hommes.
History The organisation was known before as the Cameroon Ornithological Club (COC). Before 1991, organisations were forbidden in Cameroon. So COC was illegal. After this date, COC became the Cameroonian branch of BirdLife international and began in Cameroon the IBA (Important Bird Area) program. This is a conservation program with several phases, and which is planned in 21 countries in Africa. It uses birds as a bio-indicator, to identify and protect some endangered sites and species. In 2002 the organisation became CBCS and continued its actions. Now CBCS leads many actions in several domains and in many places all around in the Cameroun.	Histoire L'organisation d'origine avait pour nom Cameroon Ornithological Club (COC, Club Ornithologique du Cameroun). Avant 1991, les associations étaient interdites au Cameroun et COC était donc dans l'illégalité. Après cette date, COC est devenue la branche camerounaise de BirdLife international et a commencé au Cameroun le programme IBA (Important Bird Area, Zone Importante pour les Oiseaux). Ce programme de conservation comporte plusieurs phases, et est implanté dans 21 pays d'Afrique. Il utilise les oiseaux comme un indicateur, pour identifier et protéger des zones et des espèces particulières. En 2002, l'organisation a changé de nom pour devenir CBCS, tout en continuant ses actions. Actuellement, CBCS conduit beaucoup d'actions dans divers domaines et diverses régions dans tout le Cameroun.
Actions IBA project - The Society is taking part in the African IBA (Important Bird Areas) project and its objective is to identify and document key areas for biodiversity, using birds as indicators and to promote conservation actions on these sites. This project is executed in collaboration with BirdLife International and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MINEF). Species Work - The Society also carries out studies on the distribution and ecology on some bird species of particular interest. Examples include the status and distribution of Bamenda Apalis in Cameroon. Studies have also been initiated on the ecology of two threatened species; Bannerman's Turaco and Banded Wattle-eye. Awareness campaign focussing on Grey necked Picarthartes via traditional Chiefs around Mbam minkom- Kala forests has begun. Excursions - Regular monthly organisation of excursions for society members, pupils and secondary schools and foreign visitors. These excursions usually take place within the outskirts of the Yaounde area leading to an update of the checklist of the region. Publication of "Cameroon Birdline" - Regular publication of the quarterly magazine "Cameroon Birdline" which highlights the various activities undertaken by the Society, briefs from different partner countries around Africa as well as the state of the advancement of the IBA project in Cameroon. Education and awareness raising - Presently the Society focuses its environmental education programme on schools around Yaounde metropolis. Pupils of primary and secondary schools are taken out for ornithological walks and initiated into birding. This is achieved through their nature clubs - some of which have become local branches of the CBCS. Capacity Building - Frequent organisation of training programmes open to universities graduate students of Cameroon as well as staff of Ministry of Environment and forestry (MINEF) and partner organisations like WWF, Campo, Mount Cameroon Project, Wildlife Conservation Society, and the Wildlife School of Garoua.	Actions Projet IBA - La Société prend part au projet africain IBA, et son objectif est d'identifier et documenter les zones clés pour la biodiversité, en utilisant les oiseaux comme indicateurs, et de promouvoir les projets de conservation sur ces sites. Ce projet est mené en collaboration avec BirdLife International et le ministère de l'Environnement et des Forêts (MINEF). Travail sur les espèces - La Société conduit également des études sur la répartition et l'écologie de certains espèces d'oiseaux particulières, par exemple le statut et la répartition de l'Apalis du Bamenda au Cameroun. Des études ont également été commencées sur l'écologie de deux espèces menacées ; le Touraco doré et le Pririt du Bamenda. Une campagne de sensibilisation sur le Picatharte chauve via les chefs traditionnels a commencé dans les forêts autour du Mbam-Minkom-Kala. Excursions - Régulièrement, organisation d'excursions pour les adhérents, les élèves et les visiteurs étrangers. Ces sorties se font habituellement dans les environs de Yaoundé et aident à mettre à jour la liste des oiseaux de la région. Publication de "Cameroon Birdline" - Publication du magazine trimestriel "Cameroon Birdline", qui met en valeur les activités variées de l'association, donne des nouvelles des différents pays africains partenaires et le stade d'avancement du projet IBA au Cameroun. Education et sensibilisation - Actuellement la Société centre son programme d'éducation environnementale dans les écoles de Yaoundé et des environs. Les élèves du primaire et du secondaire participent à des sorties ornithologiques et sont initiés à l'étude des oiseaux. Cette éducation est complétée par les clubs de nature - certains d'entre eux sont devenus des branches locales de CBCS. Développement de compétences - Organisation fréquente de formations, ouvertes aux diplômés d'universités camerounaises et au personnel du Ministère de l'Environnement et des Forêts (MINEF), ainsi qu'aux organisations partenaires telles que WWF, Campo, Projet du Mont Cameroun, Wildlife Conservation Society, et l'Ecole des Animaux sauvages de Garoua.
The grey-necked rockfowl project This project exists since November 2000, when CBCS conducted a preliminary survey of potential IBA in the Yaounde area. The society located 9 breeding sites of the picathartes oreas, and several of them were in danger of destruction. Taku Awa made the picathartes study his PhD subject and is our co-Principal Investigator for this mission.	Le projet concernant les picathartes chauves Ce projet existe depuis Novembre 2000, où CBCS a mené une étude préliminaire sur une IBA dans la zone de Yaoundé. L'association a repéré 9 sites de nidification du Picathartes oreas, et plusieurs d'entre eux étaient en danger de destruction. Taku Awa a fait de l'étude du picatharte sa thèse de doctorat et est le co-organisateur de cette mission.
